about

I started my alter ego, Fourtracula, to carve out an artistic space for myself and my life. My compositions continued to come to me and not die even when they got very old. They stuck with me, demanding I give birth to them via c-section. Some songs were actually recorded on a fourtrack back in the day. Other songs were written last month. As far as The Sexual Intellectuals, I think Randy, Chris, and Amanda deserve the best band name, especially after all of their contributions to the bass, drums, and backups. With that this record, Fourtracula and the Sexual Intellectuals came to exist.

If you listen to Now, This is Podcasting! you might know that I have been working on a record this last year. Basically, for my sanity outside of this mad Star Wars world, I wrote and made this in my bedroom using the podcast gear. This record is as DIY as everyone's podcasts are. When we couldn't podcast about Star Wars, I recorded this little new wave punk album. Strangely this record is about the internet and Star Wars culture and human connection. If you're reading a site like this one, you might relate. I hope you do. I hope this record isn't just self indulgence, as indulgent as it can be.

Sometimes the internet and the life we live on it feels like a simulation. But then I go someplace and I see people from the internet and they're real. I'm privileged in that respect in someways. But that detachment from a community while being in one can be strange and lonely but also where we find community and connection. We exist in contradiction. It is both why we keep coming back to the internet and why we meet such hateful bastards on it at the same time.

While it doesn't pop up until the seventh track on the album, The Kool-Aid Cult Revival is me being peak Kylo Ren about all of this. Nostalgia is good but it can also be so rotten. It keeps us looking backward while we move forward and walk directly into a pole. We get knocked down, and then continue to look backward to just do it again and again.

Waiting watching Star Wars feeling tired and alone
Trying to be the Kool-Aid Man that calls you on the phone
I find it funny that we often look backward nostalgically about something like Kool-Aid and being pushed in a shopping cart. But sometimes never think about how a cult poisoned itself with flavored powdered drinks and those shopping carts become a different kind of prison later in life. Also, it is kind of of hard not to when I've been called a cult leader too many times to count by angry weirdos. Somewhere in that nostalgia there's the quest for utopia but it has mostly been a dystopian future I've experienced in all of this.

On this record, I also wrote Sjw and Culture Vulture about the far right and the far left on the internet. Trust me, I don't believe centrism is the answer either. I've seen the worst in humanity on the internet from both sides now. Deep in my core, after the last year, I've tilted more towards being a misanthropic luddite than anything. Revenge of the Sith's crawl proclaimed there's "heroes on both sides." This year I've truly seen monsters on both sides with no boundaries. So this record and these songs is a "fuck you" to the opportunistic hateful mobs that grace the internet with their hateful little digits. Maybe they feel this is also just a simulation too and it's not real? I hope so because at least there's an explanation for their evil vitriol. Either way, fuck them.

We did think it would be funny to hide a spoiler in the album. But I think we might have done too good a job at it. so I don't know if I suggest l looking for it. One day, I'll reveal it though. Also, Randy plays bass on this record but the solo he wrote for "Kool-Aid"is so rad.

I priced the record at the lowest price possible.  If you can't afford it, I'll give it to you.  Hopefully you can stream it and if you like it, please share it. I'm just grateful for anyone that would want to listen to my self indulgent art rock.
